Sukhothai was founded in the 13th century. It was a thriving city. There are a lot of ruins of the city left over, stretched over 45 square kilometres. In order to make getting around the historic grounds easier, you can rent bikes for about 50 cents per day. We took about 6 hours to ride around and admire the statues (mostly buddhas, some of them really in good shape). It was fun though brutally hot. Sure enough it is pretty touristy, though it got empty around noon when it got really hot. And we also took the time to visit the wat (= temple) furthest away.
